5 Best Tips for Holiday Self-Care

Holiday Self-Care with Sample Oklahoma

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

For many of us, even at Sample Oklahoma, it is also the most stressful time of year! There are gifts to buy, gifts to wrap, parties to host, and parties to attend. In between mailing Christmas cards, photos with Santa, and several dozen cookie recipes, it is easy to let taking care of yourself slip.

If you are the vessel through which the Christmas spirit flows, Yule noel what I am talking about! You decorate your home and office space. You buy your coworker’s gifts. Your elf moves every night. The memories and traditions fall to you to spread holiday cheer to your kids and family and the difference between a good and a bad Christmas rely totally on your ability to keep it all together, with a cheery smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye. No resting Grinch face here!

No wonder you are stressed out and exhausted! It is beautiful that you want to make the season special for so many people but someone needs to remind you that you can’t be at your best without making yourself a priority! You can’t pour eggnog from an empty cup!

Here are our 5 best tips for self-care this holiday season!

Keep your self-care routine or start a new one!

Self-care is Elf care when you’re Santa’s helper! Start your morning and end your day with a magical routine. Did you know that self-neglect can be a sign something is not right with your mental health? Imagine giving 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes before bed for a self-care routine. Just 10 little minutes, while the rest of the world whirls on, for you to wash your face, hydrate your skin, and brush your teeth and hair.

If you already have a self-care routine, awesome! Keep it up! If you don’t have one, it’s time to create one!

Jack Skellington, A Nightmare Before ChristmasThe holidays are THE time for sweet treats, baked goodies, and snacky snacks! Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to avoid the office Christmas party or Secret Santa gift exchanges. Moderation and choosing healthy snacks and treats is your best bet! These make the best gift baskets too!

Exercise. Keep your body moving. It will help your stamina and energy through the hustle and bustle!

Say no to going out for late-night parties you don’t want to go to and use that time to rest! Watch a Hallmark Christmas movie. Brew some chamomile tea and put on your favorite socks. Bonus points if they are soft and fluffy holiday themed! Holiday self-care can be found all around you!

During the Holidays

Get Outside!

While holiday traditions may be different this year, there are still many things you can do outside while staying safe. Holiday self-care is very important this year!

Drive through neighborhoods and look at the beautiful lights!

Take a walk around the park! Clear your mind with the crispness of the fresh winter air. Practice being present on your walk. Get out of your head. Notice the smells, the sunlight, the sounds of laughter, or the peaceful quiet.

Volunteer and serve others!

With all the merriment, silver bells ringing, and dreams of sugar plum fairies, it is easy to get caught up. The best way to come back to the center and really embrace the spirit of the season is to help those less fortunate than yourself. Holiday self-care can come in selfless acts of kindness.

It really is better to give than to receive. It doesn’t even have to be anything huge! Serve at a soup kitchen. Write Christmas cards for Soldiers. Pay for the coffee for the person behind you in the coffee drive-thru line! A gift basket could be a virtual giving!

You can also get involved with local charities. Our local charity partner for the month is Single Parent Support Network. You can volunteer, make a donation, or even adopt a single-parent family to purchase gifts for this season. Click this link for more information on that! Each gift basket you buy from Sample Oklahoma will also support SPSN.

Manage your expectations

The fate of Christmas doesn’t rest on your shoulders. It really doesn’t. If the celebrations feel more like chores, it’s time to stop and reassess what’s going on inside of your mind. 3 months from now no one will remember if the napkins were perfectly pressed, if the red ball to green ball ratio was even, or if you could see the tape on your gifts.

Think about what the holidays really mean to you. Learn to say no to the things you don’t want to do. Breathe. Know that it is your presence and not your presents that those who love you want most.  Have a happy self-care holiday.
